All three of David’s siblings (Angel, Elena & Josh) have received their HLA kits. HLA tissue typing involves DNA analysis of six HLA antigens, which determines whether their bone marrow is a match for David. The kits contain two “Q-tip” type sticks with a longer handle. They have to rub the inside of their cheeks for 1 minute each each stick , label the kit and return it in the mail to UCLA.

For the general population one person has a 1 in 20,000 chance of matching a stranger; hence, we hope that one of his siblings is a match. A sibling is the best possibility - even then, there is only a 25-30% chance of a match.

If they find a match from the HLA typing, further tests and examinations will be conducted before they can actually donate marrow.

When asked how he felt, David said..."uh, like garbage in my fleshly body but Joy and Heart are functioning at 110% ;-)"
