The best transplant would be from a sibling. Matched sibling donors occur between 20-35% of the time. David has 3 biological siblings.
If David has the bone marrow transplant while he isn’t in remission the chances there being a successful graft goes way down.
There are two ways for a donor to give bone marrow:
- The stem cells are harvested directly from the red marrow often under general anesthesia.
- Another option is to administer certain drugs that stimulate the release of stem cells from the bone marrow into circulating blood. An IV is inserted into the donor's arm, and the stem cells are filtered out of the blood. The procedure is similar to donating blood or platelets.
The Head officers/presidents of the Cypress Police Department contacted David today about helping setup a bone marrow testing truck to go to the Riverside Sheriff’s department to help determine if anyone could be a match. They plan to meet with David on Tuesday to discuss more.
I wanted to take the opportunity to share some thanks for the people who have helped recently.
- Pastor Jerry took David to the ER on Thursday night and stayed with him until midnight.
- Cora and Jerry for watching the kids on Friday night so Chrissy could visit at the hospital
- Lorae for watching the Anna and Titus all day on Saturday
- Cora and Jerry for taking Ethan on an outing to the snow on Saturday.
- Jonathan for bringing his laptop for David to borrow and driving hours to run extra errands.
- Someone from the church who installed a ceiling fan that David had purchased as was going to install before he got sick.
- Allison, who works at a medical supply facility and brought David a cushion for the toilet seat. Last time David took Prednisone he lost so much muscle from his thighs and “back side” it hurt to sit on a toilet seat
