August 31, 2011 (Wednesday) Bone Marrow Transplant!

David’s counts were so low that they gave him platelets early this morning.

His counts today were:

WBC: .04
HGB: 10.2
Plts 6
ANC: 0 (when his Neutrophil counts reach .5 David can be discharged)

When we arrived to visit today, David and Josh were playing an online game called “Counterstrike”. Chrissy had suggested we take homemade air popped popcorn; David devoured a full ziplock bag full and then fell asleep. We went and got dinner while we slept and he sent us a text to bring him a strawberry shake, he drank half of it and then later that evening he threw it up.

I noticed his right eye isn’t as droopy, he says it isn’t as tired. David said his ears are “itchy” like the skin is sunburnt , he thinks it’s from all the radiation he received.

David said he is currently on two anti-rejection drugs, two antibiotics and an antacid.

We found out that the donor had his bone marrow harvested today. The donor had to be hooked up to a machine that extracted the bone marrow, the process takes about 6 hours. Once completed the bone marrow (or stem cells) were carried onto an airplane by personal carrier and arrived at LAX this evening. David was given Benedryl at 6:55 pm tonight, the bone marrow was delivered to David’s room and Dr. Siadatian began the transfusion at 7:28 pm. Chrissy & Josh said that David was so sleepy from the Benedryl that he slept through the whole event. Josh said the transplant ended at 9:16 pm. Joanna, the nurse  came into his room with a cake and sang “Happy Birthday” to him. It is the first day of a new beginning! I hope to post pictures tomorrow.

Dr. Sender, David's oncologist at UCI Medical Center sent a text to Chrissy that said..."Now cheerlead his bone marrow to GROW GROW and GROW"

Chrissy’s plans were to drive up and see David tomorrow, but her childcare is injured. She hopes to visit him on Saturday. She says the kids and her are handling things at home “good”. She has managed to take all 4 kids to the grocery store alone and they all survived!
